Dear users, dear readers, today is our pleasure to present a review of a product that is not only an exclusive item, for price and construction, but it is probably the best cabinet currently available on the market, made by the best manufacturer of solutions for PC enclosures. The Temjin 11 represents the excellence shaped into a cabinet, concerning both thermal and structural properties. As you will see during this review, some elements are simply stunning, although it is a cabinet made about two years ago, at the end of 2010. The fact that the TJ11 still represents a milestone among full tower cabinets is just one of the reasons of this review. The other reason will probably make this review even more interesting for you! Courtesy of SilverStone, this fantastic cabinet with a commercial value of almost 600€, will be gift-away through a sweepstake on Facebook. You can read the rules at this link. This means that one of you will be able to admire this cabinet very closely!

The Temjin 11 was introduced at the beginning of 2011, and it represents still nowadays the state of the art for SilverStone, which always stands out for releasing cutting-edge solutions in this area. The cabinet is giant, all aluminum-made and has a black special painting. It has a windowed lateral panel and outstanding cooling features including central ventilation openings and a positioning of the motherboard tray rotated 90 degrees clockwise. Moreover, an internal compartmentalization allows to thermally isolate components that can negatively influence overall temperatures. Although the TJ11 is a flagship product, its spread among end-users is quite limited, for a simple reason: the purchase price. Currently the TJ11 costs about 600 €, therefore, it is easy to understand that the targets of this cabinet are the most demanding enthusiast users. To ventilate the system, the TJ11 offers two AP-181 Air Penetrator placed in the lower part; we will see why this configuration, apparently inferior to the SilverStone FT02LE, which has three AP-181, should not to be considered as such. We are now almost at the end of 2012 and we are talking about a cabinet designed in late 2009 / early 2010 and placed on the market the following year. This would lead to think that it is conceptually outdated and perhaps there is some truth in some respects, but we will address these problems in a dedicated chapter. However, it is incredible how, almost at the end of 2012, this design still grants the highest level of thermal performance. Similar to many of its other solutions, with the TJ11 SilverStone has consolidated its position as undisputed leader in this field.

According to the SilverStone nomenclature, the name "Temjin" identifies "la Crème de la Crème", the top of the top, perhaps absolute, of the entire line of cabinets. In fact, the TJ11 is also designed for the installation of liquid cooling components and of the biggest aftermarket radiators. Indeed, it is one of the few cabinets, together with the TJ07 SilverStone, that allow the installation of one of the largest radiators, the Hardware Labs' Black Ice SR1 560 (4 x 140mm). Moreover, the TJ11 has no rivets and therefore can be easily disassembled piece by piece! Excellence has a price, but allows you to go beyond current limits.

Finally a glimpse of the main technical characteristics of the TJ11:

features

Main technical features

00139 SILVERSTONE TJ11 WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM

As reported by SilverStone, during a past interview, which follows below, it is not necessary to make openings in the side panel in order to increase thermal performances. On the contrary the overall design is decisive.

Taken from " Ventilation, solutions and concepts" article "SilverStone, seeking the  excellence"

We prefer to use fans that can still be used to fit the width of the case, so you don’t use fans to go larger than 20 cm in diameter. Even if you put an even bigger fan on the side panel, to help cooling the graphics card, it won’t always be an improvement, in general terms. A well-designed case should not rely on ventilation, right on the large side panel, with the aim of good cooling performance. We have shown that this is true especially with the TJ10, which is officially certified for use with NVIDIA 3-way SLI.

As we will see, the system used by SilverStone has allowed to excel in one of the most important areas of modern cabinets, the heat dissipation of the CPU, GPU and even the Hard Disks !

We list now the main features of the TJ11, which are selected and picked from the entire SilverStone lineup, in order to build the cabinet "par excellence":

  • Layout with compartments inspired by the TJ07
  • See-through air vents from the TJ09 model
  • 90° rotated motherboard, from the RAVEN RV01 model
  • Two Air Penetrator fans included
  • Dedicated room for liquid cooling components
  • Opening in the motherboard tray to facilitate the assembly / disassembly of the heat sink
  • Supports motherboards with a width up to 27.94 cm (11 ")
  • Support for dual power supplies
  • Big room for the ventilation of the tenth PCI expansion card
  • Dissipation system based on the "stack effect", which exploits the natural convection of heat
  • Support for motherboards with up to nine expansion slots, (XL-ATX)
  • Modern and elegant design for the aluminum front, Unibody aluminum structure
  • Advanced design for dust filters removal, although they are not magnetic (NOTE: SilverStone has put magnetic filters in the new revisions, including in the sample analyzed today)
  • Advanced system for cable management
  • Supports up to 6 3.5" hard drives and there is also a proprietary system to install SSD.
  • Power is shared via a Hot-swap system
  • Includes six proprietary connectors CP05, hot-swappable for instant removal of the hard disks
  • Anodized aluminum structure with sandblasted finish, very durable, very strong and incredibly elegant. The process is proprietary and follows precise standards of production, quality control and assembly, with sophisticated procedures that allow to ensure the highest quality for the frame and for painting. This is one of the main features of the SilverStone brand. The TJ11 is completely assembled without rivets.
  • Provides a good cooling system for hard disks, characterized by the presence of two 120mm rear fans and by the use of a horizontally rotated mounting system, which allows immediate removal of units and best heat dissipation. This system has already been implemented in the SilverStone FT01 and FT02.
  • The weight is high but not excessive. The TJ11 grants compatibility with ATX, E-ATX, XL-ATX, SSI, Micro-ATX and mini-ITX motherboard standards. The internal layout is advanced, although now there are some points that need some modernization.
  • Almost tool-less layout for easier assembly of 5.25" peripherals; however, it still needs large amount of dedicated screws, a feature that nevertheless provides great stability to the components.
  • Perfect ventilation and internal dissipation. Standing ovation for the engineers!
  • Dust filters easily removable for cleaning, at the base and rear, for the PSU and the two 180mm fans (which however must also be removed). SilverStone magnetic filters have been included in this last version.

SilverStone TJ11, external analysis

The case gives the impression of being exceptionally solid, similarly to the FT02LE previously reviewed. However, in this case, because of its height, the rear handle for carrying is not present. In the FT02, it was modeled from the single unibody piece of the main frame and it was very comfortable and sturdy. The painting is sublime and you can not damage it or scratch it without doing a lot of pressure. This model is characterized by a black external painting and a big windowed panel.

Front and upper part

The front of the TJ11 is characterized by a single body structure, which in this case is called "double unibody": this means that SilverStone has tried to further improve the previous models, in terms of sturdiness and design. This kind of process is very demanding because it requires very advanced and expensive techniques, with elaborate and very precise industrial machinery. The frame is made entirely of aluminum, with a thickness of 2mm, and is commercially available only in black color. The 5,25" front covers have a classic satin finish of excellent quality and are also made of aluminum. There are nine 5.25" slots and, in the lower part, there is not the SilverStone logo: in fact, it has been replaced by one of the two power buttons. The other one is located in the upper faceplate. In the upper part, both the USB connectors and inputs for microphone and headphones are positioned laterally, in a raised profile specific for these components; besides conferring elegance to the case, it makes inputs invisible from the front.

00071 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00065 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM

In addition to the two beautiful sidebands, we want to show you the final overview of the front with 5,25" peripherals installed:

00211 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00067 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00006 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00007 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00066 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00068 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00069 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00070 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00087 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00139 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM

On the top there is a large removable mesh, which allows the flow of hot air from the below 120mm fan and graphics cards air vents. This mechanism exploits the upward heat convection: the so-called stack effect.

00191 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00199 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00192 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00193 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00194 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00195 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00196 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00197 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00198 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00200 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00201 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00064 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM

There are no front fans as we are used to think about, similarly to the TJ04-Evolution, but thanks to the presence of two 180mm fans and the rotated position of the motherboard there is no need. So, in the upper part, we will not find the PSU; however, there are nine expansion slots which have ventilation openings (*), a perforated cover and finally the upper 120mm fan. The classic motherboard I / O shield is placed in standard position and you can see, near that, the fan controller.

Some additional details, like the thickness of the body and details of the finishing:

00072 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00073 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00116 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00059 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00060 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00137 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM

(*): Because of the phenomenon of positive vertical pressure, PCI slots are perforated by choice: in this way the air coming from below will be exhausted from above, preventing the potential recirculation of hot air inside the GPU. In TJ09, instead, that has a classic ATX configuration, SilverStone have closed these openings due to the absence of positive pressure, which helps to solve the problem of warm air loop in classic ATX cabinets.

Left and right sides

On the left side there is a big windowed panel, the two holes for direct ventilation (through AP-181 fans) and the four lower openings for passive ventilation of the base of the cabinet, well isolated from the rest. It is not absolutely necessary the lateral ventilation thanks to the particular stack effect system.

Rear and lower part

In the rear part of the TJ11 there is almost nothing because the traditional configuration has been moved to the top:

00061 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00062 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM

At the bottom, instead, we have a rubberized horizontal strip placed at the front and two rear supports which allow to reduce the transmission of vibrations from the cabinet to the floor. It is not possible to mount wheels for moving the cabinet.

Let's now analyze the interior.

SilverStone TJ11, internal analysis

Considering that this series of SilverStone cabinets is absolutely unique (FT02/RV01-2-3 and TJ11 Series), we need just a quick look to the outside to see that even in this case we are in front of a futuristic and modern design, which in fact represents the state of the art and the result of a very advanced and innovative study under multiple points of view.

In the past, in the review of the FT02LE, we wrote:

“It's the refinement in the design, combined with the presence of highly significant features that make this product one of the best you can buy. We are confident that SilverStone will continue to propose, design and manufacture products that only have as its ultimate goal the pursuit of excellence. In the ICT market, the companies that really deserve a similar praise can be counted on the fingers of one hand, but all those who have seen and experienced these products know very well what we're talking about. For example, let’s analyze in the wide range of the cabinets on the market today which could be the most advanced and interesting model from the point of view of performance, innovation and design. For some reasons, in many cases you can found standard assembly diagrams, although undoubtedly you can always find unique characteristics. For example, take a look at the Thermaltake Level 10: an enclosure that on paper really excels, which has a unique arrangement but also a design simply amazing. But excluding the design, what are the other crucial aspects in a cabinet? Thermal performance and ease assembly. SilverStone, although it has perhaps a slightly old-style approach with regard to the accessibility and the insertion of tool-less systems, excels in the first two factors, especially in heat dissipation. There are few high-end cabinets that can revolutionize this field, and as you will see SilverStone solutions represent the cutting edge, the best currently available.”

Similar considerations apply to the TJ11: the best currently available. Let's analyze it, starting from the inside part:

00097 SILVERSTONE TJ11 WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM

Cable management

00127 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00128 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00129 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00130 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00131 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00132 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM

The back, behind the plate of the motherboard, allows a good management of cables, however there are some important notes to highlight: first, the 8-pin motherboard power connector is difficult to position in the rear, even impossible in some cases. This point should be revised, unless the user decides to modify and sleeve the cable, a quite complex work. Second point, we have the tangle of cables in the base for the hard disk connectors. This is in fact a real con, both visually and in practice, because the 4-pin molex connectors, by their nature, are very uncomfortable. The SilverStone connector CP06 solves only partially the problem, since it doesn't allow the Hot-swap installation, because of the lack of a plastic adapting structure. The thickness of the rear is good but could be larger. The TJ11 is not sound dampened, unlike the FT02, and for this reason there is a little bit more space. There are mechanisms that allow easy attachment of the cables and a better management, thus, with some forethought, you will have a clean system. In the lower part, between the two 180mm fans, there is a space for the passage of power supply connectors: it is necessary to exploit this space to have an ordered system. The fixing of the video-cards and of additional peripherals is made with classic screws, and we recommend keeping these components firmly, because of the particular position against gravity

00133 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00109 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00107 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00108 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM

Motherboard tray

The steel motherboard tray is removable and rotated 90° clockwise. The build quality is very high and there are many holes for cables that, similar to other SilverStone solutions, do not have a rubber protection. As happened in the TJ-04 Evolution, again SilverStone finely finished the edges of these openings, and then, as you can see, there is no risk of damaging cables during the installation.

00112 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00113 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM

5.25'' slot management, 3.5'' and 2.5'' hard drives

The 5.25" slot management uses a classic screw-based hooking system to block the peripherals. The hard disks are inserted in a structure improved compared to the FT02LE one, because there is also the possibility to install SSDs and still there are the four decoupling rubbers, of a different type and better than in the past. An interesting feature of the TJ11 is the presence of the six aforementioned CP05 proprietary connectors, which allow to each disk the hot-swap feature. We should remind, however, that in practice you can't really hot-swap a hard drive, but only with the PC turned off. Many times the hot-swap option is incorrectly advertised because you can disconnect hard disks from the running system only if you have a particular hard disk controller that allows this feature.

00104 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00105 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00106 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00117 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00118 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00119 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00120 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00121 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00134 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00135 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM

The disks are cooled by two excellent AP121 fans mounted on the rear and in fact the recorded temperatures are much lower than the competition. The disks must be tightened, through the usual dedicated screws, to the mounting clips, and then slide them horizontally in the cage. The same applies to the management of the SSD, which in this case are also supported natively in these units; it would also be possible to install them posteriorly through the two dedicated systems, included in the bundle.

PSU Section

The positioning of the PSU is very particular because in addition to the possibility of fitting two of them, it is positioned rotated of 90 degrees in the lower part, and is thermally isolated from the rest. There are no limits in size so you can install very long models, and modular.

00181 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM  00182 SILVERSTONE_TJ11_WWW.XTREMEHARDWARE.COM

At the rear there is a filter made of hard plastic and with a quick release system (anyway for future versions we suggest the adoption of magnetic filters, such as those just introduced on the market by SilverStone).

In the upper part it is not possible the installation of radiators like the Corsair H100 as there is enough space for only a single 120mm fan; however it is possible to install models like the Antec Kuhler 920.There is much room that will allow the installation of liquid cooling systems particularly thick and bulky, also dual fan (push-pull). Alternatively it is possible to integrate at the bottom a liquid cooling system, a triple fan radiator, to be positioned in place of the two AP181 or above them. As we mentioned earlier, there is the modern rear opening for the change of the heat sink and the backplate, very large and well placed. Please note that the whole motherboard tray is removable, a feature typical of enthusiast cabinet and server solutions. The removal is done from the top but unfortunately there are no handles so we suggest doing that horizontally, after placing the cabinet on the side and after removing all power connectors and peripherals.

Type of fans used

The TJ11 is equipped with two Air Penetrator 180mm fans, so we have the maximum possible for the thermal management and the air flows of the cabinet.Excellent performance and possibility of a manual adjustment of the speed, thanks to two practical switches in the upper part.In addition to the two AP181 fans there is also a third upper fan, in extraction, with a diameter of 120mm.}The noise of the two models is contained at low RPM, but at maximum speed they can be easily heard, although in this latter case we will obtain impressive thermal performance. The side, front and rear sides do not need to mount additional fans because the laminar air flow in the cabinet would disturbed. Finally, there are two other AP121 fans, for hard disks cooling.

Some details of the AP181:

In its default configuration the TJ11 presents a positive air pressure for both main and lower compartments, so the unbalance between intake and exhaust fans will help performance and wil avoid dust entering from the other openings. The presence of anti-dust filters for the fans will further help to reduce dust inside the TJ11.

Assembling and cable management

In this section we will analyze the mounting of an Intel system and the consequent rear and front cable management. Even for novice users, the procedure is very easy: you will first need to mount the power supply in the bottom part of the cabinet by removing the aluminum panel. If you want to install a redundant PSU, you should use the connector provided in bundle by SilverStone. Unfortunately, once installed everything, it is difficult to pass the additional 4/8 pin power connector for the motherboard through the top opening on the right. We suggest using an extension cable or mount it on the front.

After that, we recommend the installation of hard drives, taking care to position them in the special structure, arranged in series. In the photo above you can see the way in which we managed the original cables in the rear, from top to bottom. We recommend using the same method, for convenience, because at the bottom there will be a big tangle of molex power connectors. Sure, this system should be improved, but the connector CP06 largely compensates for this lack. It would be interesting exploiting at the same time the connectors CP06 and CP05: SilverStone probably will propose a unified version in the future.

Once installed the hard disks, you can mount the DVD player: you must remove the front panels and replace them with the optical drive, and then screw and tight them from the sides. Then you will install the motherboard. If you have an Intel cooler, with the usual push-pin system, you can install it later, or if you want you can already proceed to install the backplate of the CPU cooler, making sure to spread a thin layer of thermal paste on the base of the CPU. Basically, if your motherboard is not mini-ITX, you must first install the spacers in the holes for the ATX form factor, tighten them very well - we suggest a 1cm wide clamp during this operation, on every cabinet - and then affix the motherboard, tightening it with the provided screws. If you have an aftermarket cooler, you can use the rear hole, which is very handy and will help you a lot during this procedure. After mounting the cooler on the motherboard, you will need to install the graphics card, RAM, and finally to assemble the cables connecting the cabinet to the motherboard. To do a clean job we recommend the use of the bands provided by SilverStone. You can find in the photos how look likes the cable management on the back, but with greater care and attention to detail the work will be even better. After the operation we recommend that you connect all the fans that are present in the cabinet. This is how looks the TJ11 at the end of the work.

We will show you also a picture of the SilverStone CP06 connectors which are recommended for the installation because they would solve the problem of power for SATA disks. In this case, of course, you will need to uninstall the CP05 hot-swap connectors this is one of the elements of the second-last chapter, which describes a potential improvement of this system by SilverStone for future versions. Undoubtedly, however, the compatibility with the Hot Swap is a great thing, because it allows the installation of SSD in a very immediate and practical manner.

In the last picture we show a cable extension which can always be useful; it would be appropriate to have at least one of them to be used during the cable management phase:

System and testing methodology

We tested the TJ11 with an X58 platform, installing on C ore i7 920 CPU heatsink Thermalright TRUE Spirit 120, with an ambient temperature of about 24.0 ° C inside the cabinet (there could be a one degree change in a positive or negative) .The use of this heat sink will be exclusively in high performance mode with two fans Prolimatech BlueVortex from 1550RPM. Tests will be carried out exclusively in configuration Push / Pull (P / Pull) in order to verify the performance of heat dissipation within the cabinet, and consequently verifying the type of air flows dedicated. Will also be used a EVGA GTX 480 with backplate and EVGA HighFlowBracket, with reference cooler, in essence, is the graphics card that heats most of all and then candidate for the test session. In order to assess the best possible efficiency of the heat dissipation of the case, we used a profile of the fan GTX 480 RPM with fixed 85%, to allow a more accurate assessment of the comparative and individual models taken into examination.

We tested the TJ11 temperature using an X58 platform, with a Core i7 920. We used the Thermalright TRUE Spirit 120 heatsink in the following system, with an ambient temperature of about 24.0 °C inside the cabinet (there may be a degree of variation in a positive or negative). We will use this heatsink exclusively in high performance mode with two fans from Prolimatech, the BlueVortex at 1550RPM. Tests will be carried out only in push / pull (P / Pull) to verify the performance of heat dissipation within the cabinet, and consequently to verify the type of dedicated airflow. It will also be used an EVGA GTX 480 with EVGA backplate and HighFlowBracket, with the reference heatsink; generally it’s the video card that heats most of all, so it is the perfect candidate for the test. We will evaluate the temperatures of CPU, VGA and HDDs in each cabinet, obviously with fans at fixed RPM. test. We will evaluate the temperatures of CPU, VGA and HDDs in each cabinet, obviously with fans at fixed RPM.

Will be compared to its efficiency of heat dissipation with other cabinet models of the latest generation

test system

We chose to use a Core i7 920 D0 CPU because it can put a proper stress on the heatsink, thanks to its 130W TDP. Regarding the RPM values they can vary in the range of +/- 10%, as specified by almost all fan producers. However, minor differences between the speeds on the same fan do not change the overall result.

We measured the temperatures at idle and full load with the software Realtemp. The full load temperatures were measured after 25 minutes of Prime95 "InPlaceLargeFFTs" (maximum stress and consumption), benchmark known for its ability to stress the CPU heavily, much more than any video game. The thermal paste used is the Arctic Cooling MX-4. We emphasize that the procedure for measuring the temperature is very rigorous and each reported number is verified, recalculated if suspect, using additional tests; a lot of attention is also placed at room temperature (Tamb) so that the results are as realistic as possible, reproducible and fundamentally correct. You can be sure that what you read here, with the same configuration and settings match, within experimental error, it’s the true value.

Regarding the test session, we used the following settings:

parameters-cpu

Test results and noise

cpu temperatures

gpu temperatures

In order to assess the best possible efficiency of the heat dissipation of the case, we used a profile of the GTX 480 fan fixed to 85%, to allow a more accurate assessment of the comparative and of the individual models taken into examination.

Due to the presence of "only two" 180mm fans you might expect a slight decrease of performance compared to the FT02LE (which has three AP181), but this did not happen, because of the "Air Duct" technology that allowed to improve performance, similar to what SilverStone did in the old but interesting TJ09. The absolute performances are fantastic, and you can expect a similar behavior with a SLI / CF configuration. Because of the orientation, in fact, there is no difference between the two cards. In traditional cabinet with standard orientation, instead, the upper graphics card can be even ten degrees hotter because of the heat convection phenomenon, that is to say the heat of lower video card tends to rise upwards. In other words, the upper graphics card mounted in a standard cabinet will have to bear all the heat from the graphics card below. In the TJ11, instead, the heat is expelled directly above and all cards benefit from a laminar flow which passes through them even when they are mounted in very close range.

Noise

The cabinet is quiet at idle, but you can clearly hear it at full load. Selecting "High", the excellent AP181s at full speed could create some nuisance but they move a very large amount of air, concentrated in the central part of the axis of rotation. At 700 RPM they are almost inaudible and performance are still high.

Looking at the future, and some comments

TweakTown shows us what the future holds for the series of SilverStone Temjin:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDqM0AavM34

Any product, even if it targets the enthusiast market and is above all really spectacular, can still have some shadows because unfortunately perfection is not possible in this world. What can we suggest to SilverStone for future revisions?

Dissipation

  • Basically asking for more is very difficult, but it certainly would help a greater compatibility with (minimum) 240mm radiators, for example in the rear panel by removing an aluminum cover.
  • It would also be interesting the possibility to install a 360mm radiator in the front. In both cases the lack of these openings avoid common mistakes for novice users, preserving the stack effect structure in any situation

Body

  • In the lower part the possibility to mount wheels to displace the TJ11 could be very useful for a cabinet of this size
  • In the back we didn't love that the connectors of the power supply could not pass behind, but only through the central hole. This should be fixed.

Compatibility

  • Compatibility with XL-ATX is fantastic, but it would be interesting if there was more space between the AP181 and the motherboard to facilitate the installation procedures
  • It would be also desirable to increase the thickness of both the front and rear, respectively for the installation of higher heat sinks and for a less complex cable management

Fans

  • Air Penetrators are great, but why not put AP181s with transparent blades and RGB LED?

Filters

  • SilverStone magnetic filters should be adopted and standardized
  • SilverStone standard filters are great but they tend to miss after some time some small wire, leading to some occasional noise in the fan, because of the collision with its blades.
  • Filters should be positioned at the bottom left and right side, for example with a magnetic and removable stripe, rather than assembled and non-removable

Installation hole for the CPU cooler

  • Slightly increase the width to enable the installation of heatsinks on Intel LGA 2011 sockets
  • Allow a better cable routing for the 8-pin CPU connector

Mods and liquid integration

A cabinet of this kind, characterized by the complete absence of rivets, is necessarily oriented to modding and to the integration of liquid cooling systems. In this case, we used two models of radiators particularly powerful and interesting, reviewed by our staff time ago: the model Phobya 280mm and 360 Slim model of AlphaCool. We will list are the various types of radiators and we try to see where it would be possible to mount them.

  • 120mm radiators, slim and double thickness: given their small size, the all-in one liquid coolers can be located easily at the top, with an exhaust fan. With such a configuration, there would be no problem for the temperature, due to the excellent ventilation from below. Alternatively, they can be positioned above a 180mm fan, but we do not recommend this latter configuration.
  • 240mm radiators, slim and double thickness: as we will see, in this case the only possible orientations are frontally, if you use aftermarket tubes, or above the two AP181s, if you use an all-in-one liquid cooling system.
  • 360 (120 * 3) / 480 (120 * 4) radiators, slim and double thickness, in this case we can found only aftermarket solutions and therefore we can use them in the base. It is possible to mount them also in the front with some modifications.
  • 560 (140 * 4) radiators, slim and double thickness: in this case it is still possible in the lower part but without a redundant power supply. It is one of the few cabinets that are compatible with 560 radiators and this is further evidence of his conception of "Non Plvs Vltra". A good candidate, for example, is the Hardware Labs Black ICE SR1 560 Radiator, that you can find here: http://www.hwlabs.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=65&Itemid=59

Concerning modding capabilities the TJ11 offers a lot, even if, due to the particular orientation, there is no possibility of adding side fans, unless you decide to use an ad-hoc plexiglass panel.

We want to show you some wonderful mods of this cabinet:
